Prehistoric Vietnamese Remains Challenge Syphilis Origin Theories
A study published in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology has analyzed skeletal remains from Vietnam, revealing evidence of congenital treponematosis, a group of diseases including syphilis, yaws, bejel, and pinta. The remains, dating back 4,100 to 3,300 years, show dental abnormalities and skeletal lesions indicative of congenital yaws, challenging the belief that syphilis originated in the Americas and was brought to Europe by Columbus. This discovery suggests that congenital transmission of treponemal diseases may have occurred in prehistoric times, prompting a reevaluation of the historical understanding of these diseases.
