Ghent University Suspends U.S. Academic Amid Plagiarism Claims Against Deceased Professor
Ghent University in Belgium has suspended a U.S. academic, Nathan Cofnas, following his role in spearheading plagiarism accusations against Jason Arday, a black ex-Cambridge professor who recently passed away. Cofnas, who identifies as a "race realist" and was previously dismissed from Cambridge, announced his suspension on X, stating he anticipates being fired. While Ghent University did not explicitly name Cofnas, it confirmed a "preliminary disciplinary investigation" against a postdoctoral researcher involved in the controversy, leading to a precautionary suspension. Arday, who became Cambridge's youngest black professor in 2023, died at 41 after resigning on August 5th amidst mounting allegations of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis and exaggerations of personal achievements. Arday, diagnosed with autism and developmental difficulties as a child, had denied the claims. The university is currently assessing whether there are sufficient grounds for full disciplinary proceedings against Cofnas.
