Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes Resigns Amid Criticism; Andre Sayles Appointed Interim Chief
Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes has resigned following criticism over the handling of a mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival. Mayor Katie Wilson has appointed Deputy Chief Andre Sayles as the interim chief. The resignation comes after Barnes faced scrutiny for not attending a timely press conference following the shooting. Barnes, who was attending a conference in Dallas at the time, later participated in a news conference with Mayor Wilson. The decision to resign was reportedly made after a meeting with the mayor. Sayles, a 20-year law enforcement veteran, previously served as the police chief in Beloit, Wisconsin, where he was credited with reducing gun violence. A press conference is scheduled to discuss the transition and the search for a permanent chief.
