Researchers Identify Earth's Natural Climate Regulation Mechanism Over 60 Million Years
A study led by Zunli Lu from Syracuse University and Ros Rickaby from the University of Oxford has uncovered a natural feedback system that has regulated Earth's climate for over 60 million years. This system involves a complex interaction between sea levels, ocean oxygen levels, phosphate availability, and carbon burial in marine sediments. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that changes in sea level influenced the availability of phosphate, a crucial nutrient for marine life, which in turn affected the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. High sea levels trapped phosphate in shallow sediments, reducing marine productivity and carbon burial, while low sea levels increased phosphate availability, enhancing carbon burial and reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide.
