Strong El Niño Intensifies Global Weather Patterns, Impacts Agriculture and Flood Risks
The Pacific Ocean is currently experiencing a very strong El Niño event, with sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region reaching 1.8°C above average and continuing to rise (El Niño Observatory, 2026). This phenomenon is expected to significantly influence global weather patterns over the next two years. In the Southern United States, El Niño is likely to increase storm activity, leading to heightened risks of heavy rainfall and flooding. Meanwhile, the Horn of Africa faces elevated flood risks due to increased rainfall, while Southern Africa and Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and Malaysia, are bracing for severe drought conditions. The Oceanic Niño Index (ONI), a key indicator of El Niño strength, has confirmed the event's intensity, which is categorized as strong (1.5–1.9°C).
