Senator Hassan Demands Accountability from AI Voice-Cloning Companies Amid $893 Million Scam Losses
Senator Maggie Hassan has formally requested information from four AI voice-cloning companies—ElevenLabs, LOVO, Speechify, and VEED—regarding their measures to prevent misuse of their technology for scams. This action follows a report from the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, which revealed that AI-related scams resulted in $893 million in losses in 2025. Senator Hassan's inquiries focus on how these companies monitor for fraudulent activities, ensure consent for voice cloning, and prevent impersonation of public figures or minors. The senator also referenced the AI Fraud Accountability Act, a bipartisan bill that aims to criminalize digital impersonation for fraud. ElevenLabs has responded, stating it has safeguards in place, while the other companies have yet to comment.
