Experimental Lung Disease Drug Shows Potential to Slow Biological Aging in Patients
Rentosertib, an experimental drug developed by Insilico Medicine in Massachusetts for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), has shown an unexpected side effect: it may slow biological aging. In a small clinical study, patients treated with rentosertib exhibited changes in blood proteins that made them appear biologically younger, by an average of three to four years, and in some cases up to six years. This finding emerged from six different aging tests, which consistently showed patients on rentosertib scoring biologically younger than those on a placebo. The most significant effect was observed after four weeks in patients receiving a 30 mg dose twice daily. Researchers compared these results with data from over 55,000 individuals in the UK Biobank, noting that the drug altered several blood proteins in a manner opposite to typical aging patterns.
