An Edmonton-area couple, June Briggs and Richard McElroy, have each been sentenced to four years in prison for criminal negligence causing the death of Briggs' 76-year-old mother, Dianne Simmons. Simmons died in June 2023 after being left on the floor of their rural Sturgeon County home for seven to ten days without adequate care. Paramedics found Simmons unresponsive, suffering from hypothermia, and covered in urine and feces with severe pressure wounds. She never regained consciousness and died the following day from multi-organ failure caused by sepsis from infected wounds, with hypothermia contributing to her death. The court heard that Simmons had fallen and was unable to get up, and despite the couple's claims that she told them not to touch her, Justice Kelsey Becker Brookes found their delay in seeking medical attention to be a substantial departure from the expected standard of care. Simmons was dependent on the couple for basic needs, and Briggs was her primary contact for healthcare providers.
