FoSci Movement Releases Report Highlighting Systemic Threats to Research Integrity
The Forensic Scientometrics (FoSci) movement has released its first comprehensive report, titled 'FoSci Report 2026: Understanding, Detecting, and Documenting Manipulation in the Research Ecosystem.' Presented at the 9th World Conference on Research Integrity in Vancouver, the report is a collaborative effort by 17 experts in academia, publishing, and research integrity. It addresses the growing threats to scientific research integrity, which include data and image manipulation, paper mills, citation cartels, and the misuse of artificial intelligence. The report is structured across three levels of analysis: micro (individual papers and anomalies), meso (coordinated misconduct), and macro (systemic issues). It emphasizes that while tools to address these issues exist, the scale and coordination of the threats are larger than previously understood.
