U.S. Legal Strategy in Mexico Shifts as Informants Emerge from Government Ranks
The United States has intensified its legal strategy against Mexican drug cartels by leveraging informants within the Mexican government. This shift has seen a number of current and former Mexican officials, including Marina del Pilar, the governor of Baja California, offering to cooperate with U.S. authorities. Del Pilar was recorded offering to become an FBI informant after her U.S. visa was revoked. This development comes amid heightened tensions, with President Trump threatening military action against Mexico to combat drug cartels. The U.S. has historically avoided indicting senior Mexican officials to maintain diplomatic relations, but recent actions suggest a change in approach. The U.S. has also designated certain Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, potentially paving the way for more aggressive actions.
