UK High Court Allows Puberty Blockers Trial to Proceed Amid Controversy
The High Court in the UK has allowed a clinical trial on puberty blockers for children questioning their gender to proceed, following the rejection of a legal challenge by campaigners. The trial, known as the Pathways study, is set to recruit over 220 children aged 11 to 16 starting August 1. This study, commissioned by NHS England, aims to evaluate the benefits and risks associated with puberty blockers, following a review that highlighted weak evidence for their use in young people. Campaigners had raised concerns about the trial's safeguards and potential long-term effects on participants. However, Mr. Justice Chamberlain dismissed these concerns, stating that the claims lacked a realistic chance of success. The trial will involve thorough assessments by specialist doctors to ensure potential clinical benefits for participants.
