Damen Launches Multi-Purpose Ship for Portuguese Navy
The Portuguese Navy's new multi-purpose ship, NRP D. João II, was launched at Damen's Galati yard in Romania on April 7, 2026. This vessel, known as a Multifunctional Naval Platform, is designed to support a variety of missions, including oceanographic research, maritime surveillance, and other support tasks. The ship boasts an at-sea endurance of 45 days and is equipped to operate unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater systems. With a full load displacement of 7,000 tonnes, the ship measures 107.6 meters in length and 20 meters in beam. It features a 650 square meter deck space capable of transporting up to 12 ISO containers or 18 wheeled vehicles, which can house mission-specific equipment. The flight deck is designed for the transport and launch of unmanned aerial vehicles. The NRP D. João II is expected to be commissioned into the Portuguese Navy in the first half of 2027.
