Morris and Lona Cohen: Soviet Spies Evade Capture for a Decade After Delivering Atomic Bomb Secrets
Morris and Lona Cohen, a New York City couple, operated as Soviet spies for decades, playing a critical role in transmitting U.S. atomic secrets to the USSR. In 1950, Lona Cohen delivered a complete diagram of the atomic bomb, specifically the 'Fat Man' weapon, from Los Alamos to Soviet handlers. This occurred shortly before the arrests of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were also accused of nuclear espionage. Despite the heightened scrutiny, the Cohens received a warning to flee and successfully escaped the U.S., avoiding immediate apprehension by the FBI. They spent several years in Poland before resurfacing in London in 1954 under the new identities of Peter and Helen Kroger, posing as antiquarian booksellers. In London, they established a new Soviet spy ring, transmitting British naval secrets to Moscow. Their espionage activities continued until their arrest in 1961, following the unraveling of the Portland spy ring. They were subsequently sentenced to long prison terms in the UK.
