Iranian Soccer Players Granted Asylum in Australia Express Gratitude for Safe Haven
Two members of the Iranian women's soccer team, Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh, have expressed their gratitude to the Australian government after being granted asylum. The players were part of a group that sought asylum during the Asian Cup tournament, but only these two remained in Australia while others returned to Iran. They have been training with the Brisbane Roar FC, an A-League team, and are focused on their safety and rebuilding their lives. The players thanked the Australian government, particularly home affairs minister Tony Burke, for providing them with a safe environment. Their decision to seek asylum came amid rising tensions, as the United States and Israel began air strikes against Iran. The players had previously sparked controversy by not singing the Iranian national anthem during a match against South Korea.
