NYC Police Investigate Multiple Incidents of Individuals Entering Sewer System in Search of Valuables
New York City police are investigating a series of incidents where individuals have been spotted entering and exiting the city's sewer system, most recently in Hamilton Heights. Early Sunday morning, a 911 caller reported seeing at least three men emerge from a manhole near West 141st Street and Hamilton Place. This incident follows a similar occurrence two days prior on the Upper East Side, where five people were seen exiting a manhole and leaving in a black SUV. The NYPD, along with the FDNY, has been actively responding to these reports, conducting investigations at the scenes. Authorities currently believe these individuals are entering the sewer system to search for valuables and scrap metal, particularly after storms, and do not suspect any nefarious intent. The department has stated it has a "robust response" to these incidents and continues to address them as appropriate.
