World Bank Group Approves $15 Million Grant for Tonga to Boost Private Sector and Resilience
The World Bank Group has approved a package of policy measures for Tonga, supported by a US$15 million grant from the International Development Association (IDA). This initiative, known as the Tonga First Growth and Jobs Development Policy Financing, is the first phase of a two-part program designed to stimulate private sector-led growth, create employment opportunities, and enhance the country's economic resilience. The program aims to address the limited economic opportunities in Tonga, where over a quarter of young people are not engaged in employment, education, or training. Key reforms include expanding access to digital payments and financial services, strengthening workforce skills and apprenticeships, improving conditions for private investment, and enhancing the sustainable management of Tonga’s ocean resources.
