Olathe Families Organize Petition to Prevent Closure of Six District Schools
The Olathe Board of Education voted unanimously (7-0) to close six district schools and consolidate two others, with the closures set to take effect at the end of the 2026-27 school year. The schools slated for closure are Black Bob Elementary, Heritage Elementary, Indian Trail Middle School, Scarborough Elementary, Tomahawk Elementary, and Walnut Grove Elementary. The district cited low enrollment numbers as a primary factor for these decisions. In response, families have formed a group called 'Olathe Families United' and launched the '6,100 Voices' campaign. This campaign is organizing a petition to request that the Kansas State Board of Education review the Olathe Board of Education's decision. Prior to the vote on October 1, school staff and parents had expressed concerns to the school board on September 22, with some requesting more detailed enrollment data from the district.
