Bridgeport City Council Addresses Sinkhole and Approves Airport Grant for Pierpont College Expansion
The Bridgeport City Council convened for its regular meeting on Monday, addressing several key municipal issues. Among the decisions made, the council voted to approve a contract with J.F. Allen Company to repair a significant sinkhole located at the Police Department shooting range. The contract is valued at $383,339.78, with an additional 10% contingency of $38,333.97, bringing the total cost to $427,673.75. City Engineer Aaron Stevens explained that the sinkhole resulted from a crushed pipe beneath 45 feet of fill, which had deformed from a 42-inch circle to an elliptical shape. The repair will involve adjusting the opening to a 36-inch steel casing. Additionally, the council approved a city economic development grant, recommended by the Bridgeport Development Authority, for the expansion of Pierpont Community & Technical College's facility at the North Central West Virginia Airport Complex.
