The two largest school districts in the United States, New York City and Los Angeles, have implemented restrictions on student use of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms for the current school year. The Los Angeles Unified School District has banned generative AI on school-issued devices, with a committee set to recommend future policies. New York City Public Schools have imposed a one-year moratorium on generative AI for students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. High school students in New York will be required to complete AI literacy modules twice a year, and some career-focused AI use and pilot programs will be permitted. These restrictions, affecting approximately 600,000 students in New York, aim to provide time to study the technology's impacts.
