Ottawa Imposes 25% Surtax on Certain Wooden Furniture, Excludes U.S.
The Canadian government has announced a 25% surtax on specific types of wooden furniture, including cabinets and vanities, effective immediately. This measure excludes the United States, Mexico, Israel, Chile, and developing countries due to international agreements. The surtax aims to address the issue of dumping, which has been causing harm to the Canadian wood product industry. The decision precedes the results of an investigation by the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, which is assessing whether increased imports are damaging domestic manufacturers.
