ETM Challenges Greenland Over Rare Earth Project Expropriation
Energy Transition Minerals (ETM), an Australian-listed company, is in a legal dispute with Greenland over the Kvanefjeld rare earth project. ETM claims that Greenland has effectively expropriated one of the world's largest rare earth deposits by blocking the project's development and refusing to renew the exploration license. The conflict arose after Greenland's government passed Act 20, which bans projects with uranium concentrations above 100 parts per million, effectively halting Kvanefjeld's mining license application. ETM has invested approximately $150 million in the project since 2013, advancing it through various stages, including resource definition and environmental studies. The company argues that the legislation was specifically designed to stop the project, despite Greenland's stated openness to mining initiatives.
