John Rutherford Faces Primary Challenges Amid Criticism Over Policy Support
John Rutherford, a prominent figure in Florida politics and a representative for the district including St. Johns County and half of Duval County, is facing primary challenges as he seeks re-election. Rutherford, who previously served as Jacksonville Sheriff for 12 years, was re-elected for a fifth term in 2024 with 63.1% of the vote. This year, he faces primary challenges from conservative podcaster Mark Kaye and write-in candidate William Upham. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Mark Heggestad is vying for the chance to challenge Rutherford in the general election. Heggestad has criticized Rutherford for supporting policies that he claims contribute to rising costs in energy, transportation, housing, healthcare, and compliance, which he argues are burdensome for families and small businesses.
