Connecticut Resident Faces Sentencing for $4 Million Counterfeit Goods Operation on Facebook Live
Melissa Cruz, a resident of New Britain, Connecticut, has pleaded guilty in a U.S. district court for her involvement in a conspiracy to import and sell counterfeit goods. The operation, which grossed over $4 million, involved selling fake designer clothing and handbags through Facebook Live. Cruz and her co-conspirators used peer-to-peer payment services like CashApp, PayPal, and Venmo to facilitate transactions. The counterfeit items included brands such as Adidas, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton, with some products imported from outside the U.S. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized multiple parcels containing counterfeit goods addressed to Cruz's residence. A court-authorized search of her home led to the seizure of nearly 2,000 counterfeit items. Cruz is scheduled for sentencing on March 12.
