NASA Captures Lush Greenbelt in Washington Suburbs from Space
An astronaut aboard the International Space Station captured a striking image of the lush greenbelt surrounding Washington, D.C., highlighting the verdant landscapes of the suburbs in Virginia and Maryland. The photograph, taken on July 30, 2023, showcases the northeast side of the Capital Beltway (I-495) as it passes through Greenbelt, Maryland. This area is known for its extensive green spaces, including Greenbelt Park, which spans nearly 5 square kilometers and features forested hiking trails, picnic areas, and a campground. The park was acquired by the National Park Service in 1950. The image also captures the historic district of Greenbelt, a planned community from the 1930s New Deal program, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, established in 1959. The photograph is part of the ISS National Lab's efforts to provide valuable Earth imagery to scientists and the public.
