U.S. Coast Guard Responds to Fire on California Offshore Oil Platform, Crew Evacuated
A fire broke out on an offshore oil platform in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, prompting a response from the U.S. Coast Guard. The platform, known as Platform Habitat, is located approximately 7.5 miles offshore and is operated by DCOR. The fire was discovered by the crew of 26 aboard the platform early on May 11, leading to an emergency call. The crew was evacuated, and two individuals sustained minor injuries. The U.S. Coast Guard has established a 1,000-yard safety zone around the platform, and two fireboats are actively working to extinguish the fire. Despite the heavy fog in the area, which has hindered the use of aircraft, the fire was eventually secured, and personnel were allowed back on the platform to conduct safety checks. The platform primarily produces natural gas, with federal records indicating significant production levels.
