Oregon Transportation Agency Faces $200 Million Budget Gap, Potential Layoffs Loom
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is confronting a significant $200 million budget shortfall for the 2027-29 budget cycle. This financial gap is primarily attributed to inflation and a decline in gas tax revenue as more residents switch to electric vehicles. The agency has been experiencing budget challenges for several cycles, and without legislative intervention, it may be forced to cut nearly 550 jobs, representing 11% of its workforce. The agency's maintenance and operations branch would be the most affected, with 193 positions at risk. Despite efforts to reduce spending by over half a billion dollars since 2019, including moving staff to state-owned buildings and implementing IT systems to reduce staff, the agency still faces significant financial hurdles. A 12-member group of business and transportation stakeholders is working on recommendations to address the funding shortfall, which will be presented to lawmakers before the next legislative session in 2027.
