American Federation of Teachers Reelects Randi Weingarten and Sets New Priorities Amid Midterm Election Preparations
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has reelected Randi Weingarten for a 10th term as president during its recent convention in Washington, D.C. The convention, attended by representatives of the nearly 1.9 million-member union, focused on strategic planning and policy development. Weingarten, who has been leading the organization since 2008, was reelected alongside Fedrick Ingram as secretary-treasurer and Evelyn DeJesus as executive vice president. The AFT convention highlighted the union's commitment to engaging educators in the upcoming midterm elections, emphasizing the importance of political involvement in shaping educational policies. Additionally, the union celebrated its organizing successes, particularly in charter schools, and addressed key issues such as the implementation of the 'science of reading' and the cautious use of artificial intelligence in education.
