Grass Fire Near Sturgis Burns 456 Acres, No Evacuations Ordered
A significant grass fire, known as the Bear Butte Fire, erupted along Highway 79 near the Iron Horse Campground east of Sturgis, South Dakota. The fire, which burned over 456 acres, was reported by the Meade County Sheriff’s Office. The blaze was driven by southeasterly winds, pushing it in a northwesterly direction. Fire crews, battling traffic from the nearby Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, quickly responded to the scene. Air support from helicopters was called in to assist in controlling the fire, which jumped Rock N Rally Road before its forward progress was halted at Bear Butte Lake Road. By 3:00 p.m., the fire's forward movement was stopped, but mop-up operations continued into the evening. The fire is believed to be human-caused, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Despite the fire's size, no evacuations were ordered, although officials noted that evacuations could have been necessary if the situation had worsened.
