Illinois Launches Major Road Project on U.S. 20, Impacting Cherry Valley Drivers
A significant road construction project is set to begin on May 1 in Cherry Valley, Illinois, as part of a $25.5 million initiative to widen U.S. 20 from four to six lanes between the Interstate 39 interchange and just east of the Kishwaukee River. This project, which includes replacing bridges, upgrading traffic signals, and realigning a service road, is part of a larger $302.4 million reconstruction of the I-39 corridor in Rockford and Cherry Valley. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) plans to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck over the next six years under Governor JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into transportation infrastructure. During construction, only one lane will be open on U.S. 20, with multiple lane shifts expected. The project is anticipated to be completed by June 2028.
