LIRR Strike Shuts Down Train Service, Disrupts New York Commuters
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) workers have gone on strike, leading to a complete shutdown of train services. This strike affects hundreds of thousands of commuters in New York. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has encouraged remote work and developed contingency plans, including shuttle buses, to mitigate the impact. However, the limited number of shuttle buses cannot accommodate the daily ridership of over 250,000. The strike marks the first LIRR work stoppage in 32 years, with the unions demanding higher salaries, which the MTA argues would necessitate fare increases.
