American Heart Association Endorses Coffee for Heart Health Benefits
A new scientific statement published in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, suggests that consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine daily, equivalent to about five 8-ounce cups of coffee, is safe for adults and may reduce the risk of heart disease. The research highlights that drinking coffee without added flavors, creamers, and sugars is linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, certain irregular heart rhythms, and Type 2 diabetes. The study also notes that tea offers similar health benefits. However, the statement warns against the consumption of energy drinks, which contain significantly higher caffeine levels and may increase the risk of irregular heart rhythms and high blood pressure.
