Representatives Obernolte and Trahan Introduce Bipartisan FRONTIER Act to Establish National AI Framework
Representatives Jay Obernolte and Lori Trahan have co-introduced the bipartisan FRONTIER Act, a legislative proposal aimed at establishing a national risk-based framework for advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. The bill, introduced in July, seeks to create uniform standards for the development and deployment of frontier AI. Key provisions of the FRONTIER Act include requiring certain frontier-AI developers to produce model cards, adopt risk-management frameworks, undergo independent audits, report incidents, and complete ongoing assessments. Additionally, the act would limit some state requirements concerning catastrophic-risk transparency, third-party audits, and incident reporting, aiming to prevent a patchwork of state-level regulations. While federal AI legislation is currently stalled in Congress, the introduction of this bill signifies a push for a unified national approach to AI governance.
