University of Nottingham Study Finds Prebiotic Fiber Reduces Knee Arthritis Pain
A clinical trial conducted by researchers at the University of Nottingham has found that a daily prebiotic fiber supplement, specifically inulin, can significantly reduce pain and improve physical function in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The study, published in the journal Nutrients, involved 117 adults with knee OA who were divided into groups receiving inulin, digital physiotherapy-supported exercise, both treatments, or a placebo. Results showed that those taking inulin experienced reduced pain, improved grip strength, and lower pain sensitivity. The study highlights the potential of prebiotic fiber to support gut health, which in turn may influence pain management and muscle function.
