Mexican Environmentalist Survives Assassination Attempt Amid Rising Activist Killings
Erik Saracho, a Mexican environmentalist and journalist, survived an assassination attempt at his home in Nayarit, Mexico. The attack occurred on March 11, when Saracho greeted the assailant with 'good morning' before the individual opened fire. Saracho, who is the director of the Jaguar Alliance, a group dedicated to protecting endangered jaguars, managed to press a panic button provided by the government due to previous threats. Despite the attack, Saracho survived after receiving medical help 25 minutes later. The incident was captured on video, and the state prosecutor's office has offered a reward for information. This event is part of a broader pattern of violence against environmental activists in Mexico, where 10 activists were killed in 2025 alone.
