Oregon's Proposed Ban on Hunting and Fishing Fails to Qualify for Ballot
A proposed initiative to ban hunting, fishing, and certain agricultural practices in Oregon, known as Initiative Petition 28 (IP-28), failed to qualify for the 2026 general election ballot. The measure, which aimed to expand animal cruelty laws, did not gather enough valid signatures, with only about 104,000 of the 142,000 submitted being verified. The initiative faced strong opposition from farming organizations, hunting and fishing groups, tribal leaders, and elected officials, who argued it would have significant impacts on agriculture, wildlife management, and outdoor recreation. Despite the setback, supporters plan to continue pursuing the measure in future election cycles.
