Austin Man Uses Hidden Cameras to Aid Police in Trail Break-in Investigations
An Austin resident, identified as James, has taken proactive measures to combat a surge in car break-ins along popular Austin trails, including Bull Creek Greenbelt, Mt. Bonnell, and St. Edward’s Greenbelt. Frustrated by repeated incidents, James installed hidden cameras, successfully capturing two individuals breaking into a truck on July 12th. The footage showed one person removing a vehicle's window and entering, then quickly leaving in a getaway car. Initially, James faced difficulties submitting the evidence to the Austin Police Department (APD) because he was a witness, not a victim, and the online reporting system rejected his submission. After FOX 7 reported on the situation, APD contacted James, and the video evidence led to the identification and arrest of two suspects, Michael Grant (65) and Fabian Ellison (40), who were already in custody for a separate break-in. APD confirmed the video was crucial in connecting the suspects to multiple burglaries that would have otherwise remained unsolved.
