San Diego Junior Lifeguard on Life Support Following Diving Accident During Training
A 17-year-old junior lifeguard, Finn, is currently on life support after a diving accident that occurred during a routine training relay at Mission Bay, San Diego. The incident took place on his last day of training with the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program. According to his mother, Courtney Renard, Finn dove into the bay to catch up with his team and hit his head on the sand, rendering him unconscious. Lifeguards quickly pulled him out and transported him to the hospital. He underwent emergency spinal surgery to stabilize his cervical spine, where his C-5 vertebra was replaced and C-4 through C-6 were fused. Days after the surgery, Finn initially showed signs of recovery, sitting up and talking, but six days later, he experienced breathing difficulties, leading to intubation and placement on life support. The San Diego Lifeguard program has expressed deep concern and is in close contact with the family, offering support.
