Zoo Atlanta Implements High-Tech Walls to Enhance Elephant Well-Being
Zoo Atlanta, in collaboration with Georgia Tech researchers, has introduced an innovative interactive wall designed to enhance the mental stimulation and well-being of elephants. The wall, developed by Georgia Tech PhD student Arianna Mastali, emits low-frequency sounds that elephants can hear and feel, mimicking their natural communication methods in the wild. This initiative aims to keep the elephants mentally engaged and has reportedly doubled the time they spend interacting with the wall. The project is part of a broader effort to provide enrichment that caretakers alone cannot offer. The zoo plans to further develop the technology to ensure long-term use without the need for constant supervision.
