Japanese Man Arrested for Robbery Attempt, Allegedly Impersonating Foreigner
Atsushi Goto, a 32-year-old Japanese man from Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, has been arrested for attempted armed robbery at a Lawson convenience store in Oizumi. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on August 18, when Goto allegedly approached the 50-something year-old store manager, brandished a knife, and demanded money by saying, “Okane wo kudasai.” This phrase, while including the word for money, also contains “kudasai,” which means “please,” making it an unusual and polite demand for a robbery. Furthermore, Goto reportedly spoke in a stiff, unnatural manner. The manager refused to comply, and Goto fled. Police identified him through forensic evidence and security camera footage. Investigators also linked him to a similar robbery the previous day in Isesaki, where 30,000 yen (US$190) was stolen using the same method and phrase. Upon arrest, Goto admitted to the Oizumi attempted robbery and stated he intentionally spoke unnaturally to sound like a foreigner and mask his identity.
