Judge Orders Release of Mother Detained by ICE at Baltimore School
U.S. District Judge Matthew Maddox has ordered the release of Adriana Gavilan Sanchez, a mother detained by ICE on a Baltimore school campus. Gavilan Sanchez was taken into custody along with her partner, Jesus Acevedo Sanchez, while dropping off their daughter at school. The incident, witnessed by their children and other students, involved ICE agents detaining Acevedo Sanchez and Gavilan Sanchez. Initially, ICE claimed Gavilan Sanchez assaulted officers, but recent court filings do not mention an assault. The couple, who are from Mexico and lack legal immigration status, face deportation proceedings. Their daughters are U.S. citizens. Gavilan Sanchez expressed fear for her family and a desire to reunite with her children. The judge has directed attorneys to file a joint status report, and Acevedo Sanchez is scheduled for a court appearance on July 23.
