Professors Challenge Texas A's Restrictions on Teaching Race and Gender in Federal Court
Four professors and a national faculty group have filed a lawsuit against the Texas A&M University System, challenging its restrictions on teaching race, gender, and sexuality. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, argues that the policy violates the First Amendment by being overly vague and restricting academic freedom. The policy requires presidential approval for certain topics and prohibits them in core courses. The American Association of University Professors, along with the ACLU, represents the plaintiffs. The policy was implemented following a controversy over a professor's lesson on gender identity, which led to her firing and the resignation of the university president. The lawsuit seeks to have the policy declared unconstitutional and to reinstate canceled courses.
