Virginia Military Institute Welcomes Record Number of New Cadets, Emphasizing Character and Teamwork
The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) has welcomed its largest-ever class of new cadets, marking the beginning of its 187th academic year. The 'Rat Mass of 2027+3' comprises 532 cadets from 36 states and 9 countries, with 84 women making up the third-largest female class since VMI became co-educational. Lieutenant General David Furness ’87, the superintendent, highlighted the rigorous nature of VMI's program, emphasizing that the institution prepares cadets intellectually, physically, and morally for future professional and personal goals. Colonel Lawrence Havird ’90, the commandant, reinforced the expectation of military discipline and commitment, stressing the importance of teamwork and continuous self-improvement. New cadets underwent initial processing, including uniform fittings and signing the Matriculation Book, before beginning the challenging 'Rat Line' experience, designed to transform them into VMI cadets.
