University of Alabama System Implements Post-Tenure Review and Codifies Advisory Role for Faculty Senates
The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees' executive committee has approved three significant rule changes. These changes include the establishment of a post-tenure review process for all tenured faculty members, which will occur at least once every five years. According to System Chancellor Sid Trant, this process is designed to support faculty success while also addressing unsatisfactory performance. Additionally, the committee approved a new academic program-review process to assess whether programs are achieving their stated goals and meeting student needs within five years of implementation. Unlike recent actions by other Alabama universities, the system did not dissolve its existing faculty senates. Instead, it codified in a new rule that faculty senates will serve in an advisory-only capacity, a practice Trant stated has been long-standing at their institutions. These changes are in compliance with Alabama House Bill 580.
