SETI Institute-led Team Explores 'Interworld Slingshot' for Space Resource Surveys
A team led by SETI Institute research scientist Pablo Sobron is investigating a novel method, dubbed 'Interworld Slingshot Resource Surveys,' to identify minerals, water, and other materials in space without the need for landing, drilling, or sample return. This project, supported by the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) study, aims to adapt Raman spectroscopy for use from orbit or during fast flybys, significantly extending its current operational range. Raman spectroscopy, which analyzes changes in laser light reflected from a target to determine its molecular structure, is already employed in close-range planetary missions like NASA's Perseverance rover. The primary challenge is to make useful measurements from distances of 30 to 50 kilometers, a substantial increase from Sobron's previous record of 120 meters.
