Research Suggests Weight Loss Drugs Like Wegovy May Also Target Arthritis Inflammation
Researchers at Aarhus University's Department of Biomedicine have discovered that GLP-1-based medications, commonly used for weight loss, may also have potential benefits in treating arthritis inflammation. The study, published in Lancet Rheumatology, found that GLP-1, a hormone targeted by drugs like Wegovy, is present in small amounts in the joints. This suggests that higher doses of GLP-1-based medications could influence inflammation directly in the joints. The study analyzed blood samples and joint fluid from arthritis patients, revealing that GLP-1 levels in joint fluid closely matched those in the bloodstream. While the findings provide a basis for further investigation, researchers caution that more clinical studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of these medications in treating arthritis.
