Bellevue Hospital Reports Surge in E-Bike and Scooter Injuries, Study Reveals Safety Concerns
A recent study conducted at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan has highlighted a significant increase in injuries related to e-bikes and scooters. Between 2018 and 2023, the hospital treated nearly 1,000 patients for such injuries, with more than two-thirds requiring hospital admission and half needing surgery. The study, published in the journal Neurosurgery, found that the share of injuries involving electric vehicles rose dramatically, from less than 10% in 2018 to over 50% in 2023. Factors contributing to the severity of injuries include not wearing helmets and riding while intoxicated. The study's lead author, Hannah Weiss, noted that most brain injuries observed were preventable, emphasizing the need for common-sense safety measures.
