Former Kansas Mayor Joe Ceballos Pleads Guilty to Illegal Voting as a Noncitizen
Joe Ceballos, the former mayor of Coldwater, Kansas, has pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges for voting illegally as a noncitizen. Ceballos, who immigrated from Mexico at the age of four and holds a green card, admitted to voting in elections under the mistaken belief that his status as a permanent resident allowed him to do so. The charges were initially filed as felonies by Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach but were reduced to misdemeanors due to a lack of intent. Ceballos has been sentenced to one year of probation, a suspended six-month jail sentence, and a $2,000 fine. His attorney, Jess Hoeme, expressed hope that these charges would not affect Ceballos' residency status or lead to deportation.
