Congresswoman Sara Jacobs Launches Youth Vision Labs to Engage San Diego Students in Participatory Democracy
Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, representing California's 51st Congressional District, has initiated the Youth Vision Labs program. This initiative brought together sixteen students from the San Diego Unified School District, ranging from eighth to eleventh grade, for a series of five structured sessions. The program's core focus is participatory democracy, emphasizing the idea that individuals closest to a problem should be involved in shaping its solutions. Students researched issues important to them, developed evidence-based arguments, and presented their findings, known as 'Youth Vision Briefs,' to a panel that included Congresswoman Jacobs, school district leaders, and nonprofit partners. The program aims to foster critical thinking, public speaking, research methodology, collaborative problem-solving, and persuasive communication among young people, translating personal concerns into policy-relevant arguments.
