Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Leads Blood Donation Effort Amid National Shortage
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has taken a proactive step to address a national blood shortage by donating blood herself and urging Iowans to do the same. The American Red Cross recently declared a national blood supply crisis, marking only the second time in history such a declaration has been made. The shortage is attributed to a significant decline in donations, particularly among younger Americans, with a 30% drop in donors under the age of 30 since the COVID-19 pandemic. Reynolds, along with members of her staff and the National Guard, donated blood at the LifeServe Blood Center to set an example and encourage others to participate. Stacy Sime, president and CEO of LifeServe Blood Center, highlighted that while 60% of the population is eligible to donate, only 3% actually do. The current blood supply in Iowa is critically low, with reserves lasting only two to three days, compared to the desired four to five days.
