Colorado Enacts New Law Requiring 30 Hours of Driver's Training for Teen Permit Applicants
Colorado is implementing a new law, HB24-1021, effective January 1, 2027, that mandates enhanced driver training requirements for teenagers seeking a driver's permit. Minors aged 15 to under 18 will be required to complete a 30-hour driver education course, which can include online instruction, approved by the Department of Revenue. For individuals aged 18 and older, the requirement is either the same 30-hour driver education course or a 4-hour prequalification driver awareness program. Additionally, minors under 21 years of age must successfully complete a motorcycle safety instruction program approved by the Colorado State Patrol before obtaining a motorcycle instruction permit.
